Red blood cells (erythrocytes) exposed to high blood sugar (glucose) levels are constantly subjected to assault from reactive oxygens species, which oxidizes their membranes and damages red blood cells. Lemongrass (C. citratus) essential oil improved antioxidant activity and prevented the oxidation of red blood cell membranes in laboratory research. The research suggests that lemongrass essential oil may protect red blood cells against oxidation caused by high blood sugar levels.
