Approximately 55% of women experience painful menstruation (dysmenorrhea) with rates among adolescent women in Africa higher than 85%, Germany 52.1%, and the USA nearly 60%. A clinical study evaluated the effects of inhaling lavender essential oil while receiving a massage among adolescent women with dysmenorrhea. Three drops of lavender essential oil were added to 40 mL of water in a diffuser that was operated during the 10-minute massage. Average menstrual pain declined from a rating of 8 to 3 after the massage and aromatherapy demonstrating their effectiveness.
